Project: CHIplace People Browser (demo).

Concept: An evolving and interactive community portrait of CHIplace members that clusters members in terms of their self-described work roles and positions members in proximity to others who have similar roles.

Features:

  • Roll-over to name and role information
  • Registered user appears in red as reference
  • Click to get person’s profile page
  • Dynamic query with checkboxes to identify people with roles
  • CHI 2002 paper preview

Novelty: Combines automatic techniques (i.e., agglomerative clustering and spring simulation for layout) with visual design elements (e.g., roles as landmarks, visual separation and tightly closed clusters).

Implementation: Browser implemented as Java 1.1 applet. Clustering and spring simulation done on server.

Principals: Done in collaboration with Andreas Girgensohn (FXPal) and Jun Zhang (U. Michigan). Jointly involved in the design, implementation, and evaluation aspects.

Publication: Lee, Girgensohn, and Zhang 2004.

Work Conducted: November 2001 — January 2002.
